This is a 12V DC input to 12V DC output charger, also known as a battery to battery charger that is used to rely power that is received by one battery (from the alternator) to transfer the appropriate voltage an charging profile to another, secondary battery or battery array.
The BB1270 DC-DC charger correctly calculates the battery (or battery banks) charging needs and boost charges with the correct charging algorithm for your battery anytime the vehicle alternator is running. It will also go into float voltage mode when the battery is full.
The BB1270 has a number of unique features, one being higher than average charge rate. While most DC-DC chargers are limited to a maximum of 30A - 50A, this charger has a Max Capacity of 70A, which is much closer to the recommended charge current of DCS LFP batteries.
A higher charge rate means a shorter charge time for a depleted battery bank. For example, a 12V, 400Ah DCS battery bank with 0% SOC would take approximately 13.3 hours to fully charge if a 30A DC-DC charger is being used, but it would only take 5.7 hours with a 70A DC-DC charger and it would only take 3.3 hours with a 120A DC-DC charger.
The BB1270 has a bi-directional charging, or reverse charging feature, enabling it to charge in both directions. Provided the house battery is above 13.5V (if LFP) and the starter battery is below 13V, the BB1270 will allow approximately half of the current (~20A) to flow back to the starter battery, up to ~13.4V (float voltage). Simply put, it allows the starter battery to remain topped off when there is surplus energy in the house battery bank.
The BB1270 also has an adjustable current limit. The default current setting of this DC-DC Charger is 100% (full power) but the current output setting can be adjusted to provide reduced maximum output, which can be beneficial under certain circumstances. For example, your battery bank may have a lower recommended charge rate by the manufacturer, or you are able to rely more on solar, so you can lower the max output in order to put less stress on the alternator and save fuel. It can also be used for future proofing. You may have installed a higher powered BB1270 with the assumption that you one day will also install a higher output alternator or larger battery bank.
If want to take full advantage of the exceptionally high charge rates of our line of LFP Batteries and thereby significantly reducing your charging time, the BB1270 12V-12V DC-DC charger is your best choice.
